Need more space

Need more space?

With winter in full swing, now’s the time to start planning your home extensions. If you’re working with your local Pzazz Building operator, you could have your plans and consents in place by summer – the best time of year for building. Here are some brilliant ideas to get you started.

Wellington house extension

Home extensions are one of the best ways to add value as well as space to your home. And if you have a smaller property, one of the best ways to extend is by going up. In this case, a new room has been built into the rooftop. Importantly, the style of the original home has been retained – even the railings on the balcony are the same as those below – making the addition look as though it has been there all the time.

New meets old house addition
Here’s an example of a traditional-style home that’s been both extended and modernised. Although the new timber and glass section is in complete contrast to the original structure, it ‘fits’ and, very cleverly, has more than doubled the living space by going out as well as up, providing a massive balcony on the roof of the downstairs extension.
Taranaki house extension

To be worth extending, a home must have ‘good bones’. The original home you see in the inset on the photo above shows the type that’s just not worth it – poorly built and with no redeeming features. It was more practical and economical in this case to just get rid of the old and bring in the new, which is exactly what you see Isiah Reynolds and his team at Pzazz Building Taranaki doing. We’ve used this work-in-progress to show you that Pzazz Building can handle new builds as well as extensions and renovations – stay tuned-in for updates!

New meets old in Auckland

Ex-state houses are hot properties now because they’re solidly built and offer bountiful opportunities for improvement. Building up is often an option because of the original houses’ inherent strength, but where height-to-boundaries are restrictive, building out is the way to go. In this case, the architect made a gutsy call by contrasting the new (square, black and vertically clad) against the old (white and horizontally clad). But it works! And how happy those children must be to have a superb new outdoor area complete with swimming pool!

Small house transformed

How many single-level bungalows are there in New Zealand with three small bedrooms and just one bathroom? The owners of this one in Wellington decided they’d had enough and enlisted Rudy van Vlerken of Pzazz Building to add 100 square metres of life to the top of their home. A stunning modern façade and views of Wellington harbour were added extras. Just part of the service!

Extended kitchen and dining area

Extending your home doesn’t just mean creating a complementary or contrasting exterior – you need to think about the inside, too. In this case, the owners pushed their existing home out to where you see the dining table now, and took the opportunity while they were doing it to bring their whole home into the 21st century by moving the kitchen and revamping the whole home’s décor. This included adding big glass sliding doors and skylights to open up the home and let the light in.

Nelson house extension

Peter Billings of Pzazz Building is one of the nicest guys and best builders you’ll find at the ‘top of the South’, even though we say so ourselves. He helped Rosemary and Phillipe of Nelson to turn a 1960s home with a single garage into the magnificent home you see now. Now there are striking views of the bay from the upstairs windows and a private outdoor living area to take advantage of all that Nelson sunshine.
