Pzazz Building carves out a wine cellar

Pzazz Building carves out a beautiful wine cellar in the heart of this home

A connoisseur of fine wines with a considerable collection, our client wanted a wine cellar in the European tradition, literally buried deep inside his home.

To an aficionado of fine cuisine and wines, there are two hearts of the home - the kitchen and the wine cellar, both inextricably connected. In days of old, the wine cellar formed a kind of foundation for homes, buried deep down under them for security as well as to keep the wine cool.

Our clients' home, however, was a typical Kiwi dwelling with limited space for the style and scale of cellar our client had long dreamed of. Because it was built into the side of a hill, considerable excavation had to be done to hollow out a cellar-sized space. Concrete blocks and reinforcing were then laid down to shore up the excavation.
Even the door to the new cellar was crafted in the style of the originals - beautiful, but strong enough to withstand a siege if necessary.
And here, just before being lovingly stocked up with the owner's wine collection, is the finished result, complete with a shrine at the end in honour of the patron saint of wine, St. Vincent of Saragossa.
