Bathroom flooring

Bathroom floor finishes include tile, vinyl, natural timber, timber panelling and concrete to name but a few. Some key considerations when choosing your floor finishes include how the space will be used, whole of life use and cost. Tiled floors are popular and visually stunning but come with the extra requirement of a weatherproof membrane and a council building consent.

Bathroom flooring has come a long way since lino and tiles

As we all know bathrooms are full of water and steam so choosing the best products to not only enhance your bathroom aesthetics, but also to stand the test of time, is critical. Different choices have different time implications for the project also. Despite the impressions you may get from some TV shows a tiled bathroom floor will take three days to complete if you follow all of the manufacturers guidelines whilst a vinyl floor can be laid in one day and ready for use the next.

Our recommendation if using tiles is to install underfloor heating. We say this for two reasons – tiles can be cold and it is a room mostly used in bare feet - s who wants to stand on a cold floor whilst we make ourselves look glamorous. Also underfloor heating is a great way to keep dampness out of the room.

Today's vinyls have come a long way from yesteryear with many designs almost impossible to tell apart from tiled floors. Vinyl has the added advantage of not needing a waterproof membranne and building consent plus can be tightly rolled up the first 150mm of the wall to produce a “tanked” waterproof area suitable for both adventurous children or people who need full access showers.

Stained timber floors and click together wood veneer panel floors are also a popular choice along with polished concrete – plain or with a designer finish.
