Inside the house it feels as if you are living in a huge tree house. From every window you see stunning city and mountain views framed between large branches where hawks, crows, hummingbirds.The house is filled with interesting furniture and artifacts which the owners have collected over the years.

OK, we’re still in California, but this home’s claim to fame is it’s completely off-grid, which means it’s self-contained in terms of energy. Nestled in eight secluded acres of forest in the Sierra with magnificent forest and lake views, this inspiring home is perfect for a romantic getaway or exploring forest trails, historic gold rush towns or nearby ski fields. Designed by architect Michelle Kaufmann, the house has Build It Green and Keep the Sierras Green certification.

4. Self-contained studio, Cottesloe Beach, Western Australia

Centrally located between Perth and Freemantle, this Airbnb is the perfect place from which to explore this historic, beautiful and often-overlooked part of Australia. And to visit the world’s cutest creature, the Quokka, seen here with the less-cute Roger Federer in its natural habitat on offshore Rottnest Island.

5. Windmill House, Amsterdam, Netherlands

What more quintessentially Dutch place to stay than a windmill? Although it looks from the photo as though it’s stuck out in the countryside, this one’s located just 10 minutes by bike from Amsterdam’s central train station and there are cafes and shops nearby.

“It would be my pleasure to show you around in the top of the windmill,” says the owner, Roel, in his Airbnb listing. “If allowed by the weather conditions, the wings may even run!”
