5 Ensuite bathroom designs for New Zealand homes

Ensuite bathroom designs for New Zealand homes

Every master bedroom deserves a beautiful ensuite, yet so many home owners overlook the benefits that a well-designed ensuite bathroom can bring.

New ensuite bathroom

An ensuite offers much more than an extra shower and a toilet. Providing privacy with a touch of luxury, an ensuite bathroom adds monetary value to a home and the personal space we crave for in our busy lives. But before you dive into buying new taps and searching for tiles, it pays to do some research into styles of ensuite designs before starting your bathroom renovation.

It is interesting to note, that by choosing to have instead a large family bathroom, home owners may be unintentionally lowering the potential value of their home and reducing its practicality.

Maximising space in ensuite bathrooms

Designing your ensuite bathroom

When building a new house , incorporating an ensuite into the plan at the start is much easier than attempting to install one in an existing home. However, plenty of home owners have used a walk in wardrobe or closet as part of their new ensuite in their master bedroom by renovating instead and you can find out more about Master Bedroom design in our previous article. If space is at a premium, an extension to your bedroom may work better, ensuring you do not need to compromise on the size of your bathroom or bedroom.

Last year we covered how to maximise the space in your ensuite - but here is an overview of 5 main paints to consider when designing your ensuite bathroom:

  1. Know what you want to achieve – did you want a ‘spa’ like room to relax in or an extra shower for the morning rush?
  2. Are you after a separate bath and shower or just a shower?
  3. How much storage will you require?
  4. Are there any views you want to take advantage of?
  5. What type of lighting will you use – artificial or natural, such as skylights?

Popular ensuite bathroom designs

Ensuite bathrooms today are no longer the small shoe box sized rooms of the past. Light and airy, modern or traditional, ensuites provide a retreat for the adults of the house, somewhere they can relax, unwind and spend time together. We’ve put together a list of the most popular ensuite bathroom designs for you to think about:
  • White has remained the ever popular classical choice for ensuite designs. Looking clean and crisp on walls, ceilings and floors, white is also the most common colour for bathroom vanities, baths and showers. White also has the advantage of being less susceptible to changes in style and remains modern looking for longer.
  • Scandinavian design has reached into our bathrooms, with wooden wall and floor panelling options. Wooden vanities and shelving are also popular choices now too, along with the use of recycled building materials. For a touch of nature itself, living vertical walls of indoor plants are a lovely feature.
  • An ensuite retreat might be perfect for you if you want to have your bedroom and ensuite combined. With no walls save for the toilet, the result is a larger and more open plan appearance.
  • Freestanding bathtubs have continued to rise in popularity. Often a space saver, they act as an eye catching feature and allow you to change the look of your bathroom with an angular or curved shape.
  • Showers are becoming larger, with double showers quite common now. Although all in one showers are still used, titled showers and bathrooms are quickly growing in popularity.
