You might think Elon Musk is laughing all the way to the bank, having sold all of his mansions in California, including the one at the top of this page, which he bought for US$23 million and listed recently for US$37 million.
But as Musk is thought to be worth more than $160 billion, he could make more in a day from his businesses than the total value of the six houses he sold.
So we did he sell up? Of course, everyone wanted to know. Was he expecting a property market crash?
At first he was uncharacteristically cagey. But then it turned out he had quite different reasons.
Reason No. 1, Musk said, was that he wanted 'freedom'. Specifically, the freedom to move to Boca Chica, Texas, where his SpaceX headquarters are located.
But did he buy another mansion in Texas? No, instead he decided to rent this US$50,000 (NZ$72,000), 37-square-metre tiny home from SpaceX.
"It's kinda awesome though," he said on Twitter.
How tight is this man? Even the miserly Scrooge McDuck lived in a mansion!
Turns out that Elon isn't planning to live in this tiny home forever. Reason No. 2 for selling up his Earthly possessions, he claims, is to go and live on Mars. The SpaceX founder has confided that that he wants to have as much capital available as possible for a mission to the red planet, followed by setting up a colony there.
He has even said he would be happy to die there.
But before we start to question Musk's stability, let's get back to the original purpose of this blog—to take a look at this fascinating tiny home concept.
We're not sure if this is Elon in his Tesla getting ready to tow his new home from the Boxabl factory in Las Vegas. What we are sure of is that if this is the whole house, it's the most portable one we've ever come across.
Once on site, your Boxabl simply unfolds like a flower. Almost all of the home's finishes—including electrical and plumbing—are completed in the factory before it's shipped so when it arrives at its destination, the home only needs to be unfolded and attached to its foundation and utilities.
Click on the video to see how the home can be fully set up in less than a day.
And here's what you get—a fully equipped, energy efficient studio apartment. The Boxabl comes with some cool amenities—a large fridge, double sink with a view, oven, dishwasher, microwave and two-person built-in dining table in the kitchen, a shower/tub, backlit mirror and sliding glass barn door in the bathroom and an ironing centre, washer/dryer and airconditioning in the living area.
Here's the inside story—the view from Elon's kitchen. Of course, being space-conscious, we would have liked to see more flexibility to make even more of the layout—for example, a fold-up bed that doubles as a sofa during the day, eliminating the need for separate bed and sofa and opening up the living space even more.
Our Nesta Homes may not unfold from a box, but they're designed to be constructed quickly on your property. We also think our designs are smarter and more flexible, and there are a range of options available, from studio to one and two bedroom homes.
