Turn Your Home Into Your Own Wellness Centre

20 January 2025

We spend more than half our time in homes but we almost always go somewhere else for our health and wellbeing – the gym, a spa, a massage clinic. Why? Have you ever stopped to think about how your home could better support your family’s health? Here are our tips on revitalising your own space so you can revitalise yourself.

How Clean Is Your Air?

These days, the best way to improve your indoor air quality (IAQ) isn’t necessarily to open your windows, especially if you live in a built-up urban area or it’s the middle of winter. Kiwis don’t tend to see IAQ as a concern but scientific surveys have consistently found poor indoor air quality in New Zealand houses. The culprits are often damp, condensation, humidity, mould and VOCs (volatile organic compounds released from building products, furniture and flooring).

Pzazz Building can help you improve the IAQ in your home by advising on and fitting ventilation, heating, air cleaners, low VOC paints and building materials, and indoor planting and vertical gardens.

Let the Light Shine In

Natural light has healthy, stimulating, mood enhancing benefits that artificial light can’t emulate. It is essential for helping the body to produce vitamin D and serotonin, the ‘happy’ hormone that combats a type of depression called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

There are a variety of ways to bring more light into your home such as adding or enlarging windows or glazed doors, you can also opt for skylights or light tunnels that are especially suited for spaces such as a windowless bathrooms or perpetually enclosed hallways.  Adding a sunroom or conservatory is a great way to enjoy the natural light and warmth all year round. However one of our favourite ways to make the most of the suns rays is to extend you living space outdoors, creating an outdoor living space as comfortable and functional as your indoor one.

Create Your Own Special Happy Place

Toilets and bathrooms used to be the only places you could lock yourself away from the cares and tribulations of everyday life, but these days people are creating all sorts of happy places such as man caves, studios, workshops, home gyms, saunas and sunrooms.

The secret to creating your own happy place, we’ve found at Pzazz Building, is to identify what makes you happiest and then create a design around your needs. Browse our range of studios from Pzazz Homes to find the perfect design for your new 'happy place.'

Create Your Own Spa

You deserve better than an okay bathroom with mediocre water pressure! Turn your bathroom and shower into an at-home spa experience that contributes to your everyday wellness.

Pictured above is the NonSoloDoccia Home Corner Steam Shower Cabin - this shower system is designed in Italy by a company that specializes in health-giving bathroom solutions. It features waterfall and hand showers, it comes with a steam generator, soft-surface shower tray and seat, aroma dispenser, controls for lighting and cromotherapy and of course Bluetooth with hidden speakers. While this top end shower might be out of everyone's price range it's a great source of inspiration to show that a home bathroom can become a home spa.

Get Your Own Private Massage Parlour

Sweating it out in your own sauna or submitting to the shock of a cold plunging is a great way to rid your body of toxins through sweat, but for the perfect complementary treatment, you need to both sooth and stimulate your body at the end of a long day is full body massage. We recommend adding a proper massage table to your wellness environment and either encouraging your partner or family to learn the fine art of massage or hire a masseur or masseuse who does home visits.

Why September is the Ideal Time to Plan September is a turning point. While winter is still lingering, spring is just around the corner. This makes it a smart time to start planning renovation projects before the busy summer months arrive. Contractors and suppliers often book out early in the season, so getting ahead ensures your space is ready to enjoy when the sun really shines. It’s also easier to assess what your home needs now, after months of being indoors, you’ve probably noticed areas that could use improvement, like a lack of natural light or poor flow to outdoor spaces. Creating Indoor - Outdoor Flow A home that connects easily with the outdoors feels larger, brighter, and more inviting. Good indoor-outdoor flow isn’t just about adding a sliding door; it’s about creating a natural extension of your living space. Creating Indoor - Outdoor Flow A home that connects easily with the outdoors feels larger, brighter, and more inviting. Good indoor-outdoor flow isn’t just about adding a sliding door; it’s about creating a natural extension of your living space. Key Considerations: Doorways and Access: Bi-fold or stacker doors can open wide to connect your living area with a deck or patio. Floor Levels: Minimising steps between inside and outside creates a smooth transition. Layout: Think about how furniture is placed inside and how it relates to outdoor spaces. A thoughtful design can make everyday living more enjoyable and enhance the way you entertain guests.

Beyond the Hammer: The True Value of a Renovation Specialist You might think a builder is all you need for a home renovation, but a true renovation specialist offers so much more than just swinging a hammer. While a builder excels at physical construction, a specialist provides comprehensive project leadership, guiding your vision from concept to stunning completion. They navigate design complexities, budgeting, material selection, and council regulations, keeping you fully informed and actively involved at every stage. It's about seamlessly integrating aesthetics, functionality, and compliance, ensuring your transformed space perfectly reflects your desires with transparency and collaborative expertise. Navigating the Kiwi Renovation Landscape: Local Expertise Matters Undertaking a renovation in New Zealand comes with distinct rules and nuances, making local expertise invaluable. A specialist deeply understands the intricacies of NZ building codes, resource consents, and specific regulations that vary even between local councils.
